A panning shot, a few jump cuts and a whole lot of tracking, all in the first 5 minutes of the film, nothing seems clustered in this interesting take on young romance from the brilliant Wes Anderson. Moonrise Kingdom is a gem to watch, perhaps his most passionate film yet. After having watched the fantastic the Darjeeling Limited and the Fantastic Mr Fox, i was eager to see what Mr Anderson would do next with his subtle filmmaking style.
The film itself centers on to young lovers in a more loving setting, 1965 to be precise. Newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play our protagonists Sam and Suzy. The two are unpopular in their private circles but smart in their own right. After an encounter in a school play that breeds love at first sight, the two run away together far into the woods leaving behind a semi-worried search party. it wont all go wrong though as Sam is a scout learning how to do things that ahem..scouts do. Suzy on the other hand is our princess totally embroiled in her new loves bad boy image.
Their island of New Penzance- just off the shore of New England - is a darling of an island, with sailboats gliding accross the water and a search party consisting of andersonian characters that will have you laughing throughout the film. Frances Mcdormand and Bill Murray portay Suzy’s quirky and marriage tangled parents. while bruce willis provides the role of captain Sharp, a depressed and lonely figure of a man who heads the search. Edward norton plays a bizarre boys scout leader who’s uniform and demeanor makes him look like a thirty year-old about to get ready for a school play. Although he presents himself with some dignity in the closing moments of the film. Tilda Swinton provides a strong if not short performance where she is a social services officer alien to those that meet her on the island. As these various characters look for the two lovers a storm is brewing off-shore and the climax will have you begging that they stay safe.
The film has its andersonian labels; voice overs, set’s that look like toys, and quirky characters.
