Anna Karenina: Trailer
This is hardly news, as the trailer has been out for quite some time. Even so, it is still important that we discuss it.
Anna Karenina is adapted from the book of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. The trailer begins with a quote by Leo Tolstoy.
"There are as many loves as there are hearts";
however the truth of it is that, that quote can hardly be called a quote at all for the original passage is this:
“I think... if it is true that there are as many minds as there are heads, then there are as many kinds of love as there are hearts.”
There lies my problem with the movie. I fear that all the best parts of the book will be left out because they may not necessarily fit the hollywood ideal. In my opinion the book is about the greatest love and the greatest vengeance. I have not finished reading it but I have read enough to now that I will probably never read a better book.
The movie is directed by Joe Wright, and Keira Knightly plays Anna Karenina, the lead role. What you may not know is that this duo forms quite the trio. They have made three movies together, including Anna Karenina. The other two movies are Pride and Prejudice, and Atonement. Both of these movies were critically and publicly acclaimed. Both of them were historical pieces. Joe Wright and Keira Knightly seem to have a clear understanding of the needs of the genre so it is safe to say that Anna Karenina could not have been in better hands.
The movie also stars Jude Law, who plays Alexei Karenin (Anna Karenina's cold passionless husband) and Aaron Johnson who plays Count Vronsky (Anna Karenina's handsome lover). Unlike most, I support the casting decision for while Jude Law may be the handsomer of the two, he also strikes me as the colder of the two.
I, like most of you, will await its release with bated breath.
