Ridley Scott redefined the science fiction/horror genre with the suspenseful
and terrifying Alien (1979). While
not a direct prequel Prometheus definitely contains strands of Alien DNA and
aims to answer some of the questions from its predecessor, but unfortunately it
suffers by raising more questions than it answers.
Prometheus centres on
scientist Elisabeth Shaw as she investigates our origin using a star map left
by unconnected ancient civilisations. She is joined by a her partner and fellow
scientist Charlie Holloway (Noomi Rapace) and a crew of stock characters except
for the interesting David (Michael Fassbender) who ironically is the android
among the group.
Like Alien they land,
investigate and bring something back to the ship and all hell breaks loose, however
the similarities end there. This is not necessarily a bad thing, after all
Alien was three decades ago and cinema has evolved significantly since then.
Instead of dark corridors we have a black desert like landscape, a bright ship
interior but still keep the organic creepiness of the alien ship and the
visuals are certainly beautiful. Unfortunately those are the only memorable qualities of the
film that suffers from a seemingly directionless script. The dialogue is poor
and the acting seems forced sometimes, though the actors should be commended
for doing the best they can with dialogue presented.
In summary Prometheus
is a moderately paced fun but very forgettable film that isn’t scary nor suspenseful
but might appease some Alien fans by providing answers.
